After reading this book I've ordered a copy for a grandson and my own son. I knew very little about the SEALS but I've always admired them for what I've read and seen. I like the way the book is written. I always felt that I was in the story with these guys--but thank God I wasn't.

This is a genuinely funny book! As an aside note here, People who gave this book one or two stars, must truly be incurably miserable people that they would never find ANYTHING funny! How truly SAD for those types of people.

I ordered this book because I heard the author talking about it during a radio interview and it peaked my interest. When I finally got the book I was very pleased, as I was taking it with me on a business trip to India. While reading, I found myself laughing out loud, and after my third outburst of laughter, the stewardess came over to tell me to please try and control myself. I gave her the book and told her to please read the short chapter that I had just finished about "Foggy Ice Cubes." She did, and then SHE started laughing hysterically! She also wrote down the name of the book.

All the events that are written about in my book are true.... Only the names of the victims and perpetrators, as well as a few of the locations where the events took place, were changed to protect all those concerned!

About the Author
Billy Allmon is a retired Navy SEAL, he honorably served his country from 1969 to 1993. He retired as a chief petty officer, and he is a combat veteran of three wars. While in the Navy SEALs, Mr. Allmon participated in numerous covert and overt missions around the world in support of US doctrine, foreign governments, militaries, and other official agencies. His new book, "When the Bullet Hits Your Funny Bone - The Essence of a U.S. Navy SEAL," is a reflection of the humorous side of life in the U.S. Navy SEAL Teams. Billy Allmon will have you in stitches as he reveals how U.S. Navy SEALs use their humor (and at times it is very dark humor) to relieve the stresses of combat, while facing death on almost a daily bases.

This book “The Twilight War,” by David Crist, gives an extremely thorough and well researched history of the Iranian US conflict from the revolution to today.　　　David Crist, is the son of CENTCOM Commander George Crist who oversaw middle eastern forces throughout the 1980’s. This gives Crist a unique and rare perspective and access to information not typically available to the average citizen. It is evident that his research was extremely vast and painstakingly detailed. My anticipation for this book was to gain insight from a completely American perspective, I was not disappointed. Crist provided a play by play of nearly every event that occurred post revolution and the perception of events from an American military standpoint. His work shed light on many different examples of Iranian instigation and disruption throughout the middle east and how those antagonisms effected the US military. Including an assassination attempt in Washington of a Saudi Ambassador.　　　Although Crist did not hold back in his work and offered many examples of times when America was at fault in the political antagonism, this book is indeed written from a skewed perspective. Crist began his historical account primarily at the time of the revolution and went into great detail as to what happened, but he failed in explaining why the events occurred. To truly understand the American/Iranian conflict you must have a thorough grasp on Iranian culture and history and why the revolution had as much to do about America and Europe than it did about Islam and Anti-zionism.　　　Although the perspective is one sided, the author reports facts accurately, descriptively, and leaves out personal bias and opinion. This did not read like a propaganda piece, but more of a dry recitation of information. If you are looking to get a detailed and honest record of the history between Iran and the US for the passed 30 years, this is a great resource. To fully understand why the Iranian and US relations are in their current state, I would encourage you to find more resources.

I just finished reading Crist's history and was impressed, primarily at Crist's obviously earnest effort at "objectivity." He chronicles clearly the US and Iran, taking turns, one after the other, in missing opportunities for a reconciliation, with the resultant impenetrable distrust at the end of 30 years. His work, published in 2012, is not optimistic; he sees the future as most likely a transition from twilight to darkness, by which he clearly means a massively destructive war.I was surprised at the intensity of the criticism of Crist's work for supposedly shoddy sourcing, to the point of challenging endnotes. The one thing that seems clear is that Crist had extraordinary access to resources, both human and archival. The lead criticism, based on endnotes, focuses on Crist "detailed" description of the 1983 bombing of the marine barracks in Beirut, which supposedly fails to mention the doubt about the bombers' identity. But Crist's own rendition of the events at p. 135 merely describes as "likely" the man identified as the attacker; Crist's endnote expands on the uncertainty by reciting the alternative theories put forth by American intelligence reports in 1984, Hezbollah sources in 2003, and CIA sources, all of which he describes as underscoring the unclear identity of the perpetrator.Again, the criticism of Crist's discussion of Iranian penetration of Iraqi militias, is it's "complete certitude" and purported attribution to a 2008 West Point study, which the reviewer states "does not support" Crist's account. However, endnote 7 to Chap 26 at p. 620 does not, as the critic suggests, attribute the narrative to the West Point study; it merely cites the study as "an accurate and comprehensive overview of Iranians activities in Iraq." As to certitude, maybe Crist's narrative is more confident for having access to Wikileaks' 2011 release of internal US communications, obviously not available to the West Point authors at the time of their 2008 publication. After all, no one ever criticized Wikileaks for inaccuracy.Finally, if the book ended at p. 415, as suggested, we'd miss the entire George W. Bush and partial Obama era histories through 2012. They are critical to the broad narrative that Crist portrays of administrations, both Republican and Democrat, missing opportunities for reconciliation at critical moments....and the Iranians copying the errors of their American counterparts. Nothing in the endnote attacks undermines the utility of those chapters for that purpose.

I read this as part of a book club that I am in. The writing was nice and the story was captivating. Would definitely recommend!

Fifteen year old Bee lives in Seattle with her parents in a 12,000 square ft building that once was a Catholic school for wayward girls. To say their lifestyle is unconventional would be an understatement. Their "home" has blackberry vines growing through the floorboards, a roof that leaks like a sieve, and an odor that would assault anyone's nose who might enter; yet the three of them don't seem to notice. It's not because of lack of intelligence or money. They all have Einstein level IQs. Elgin has a very high level job at Microsoft, Bernadette is an award winning architect, and Bee has been accepted to a prestigious boarding school.They are planning on taking a trip to Antarctica over Christmas break, a reward for Bee's perfect report card. But things start going awry. And then Bernadette disappears...This is a strange story told in an unique way. It's told by Bee with the help of emails, letters from school personnel, police reports, medical reports, invoices, etc. This book is satirical; certainly not a book anchored in "everyday life" realism. In this regard, it reminds me a bit of Rachael Joyce's "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Frye"."Where'd You Go, Bernadette" isn't for everyone. Of course you can say that about every book ever published, but that goes double here. I would've given up on it if not for a reading buddy who pushed me to stick it out. The characters are not likable in the beginning (or understandable), especially Bernadette. But once I got through the first quarter, I was invested in the story. And when I reached the last page, I realized wisps of Bee, Bernadette, and Elgin have been written in my memory bank with a permanent marker. They'll fade, but never completely leave.Can't possibly give this less than 4 stars.

Thank goodness I picked this book back up after not liking the Kindle sample a couple of years ago. It was so odd and quirky—laid out as a series of speakers or written communications alternating to roll out the story. So many others loved the book that I gave it another try. I'm so glad I didn't miss this highly entertaining, funny, poignant, and remarkably original work.There are so many layers here, and my review will not do it justice. It is a screamingly funny and intelligent satire of the wealthy, bright, but eccentric "Microsoft executive types" in Seattle. A review on Amazon got it just right: "A whip-smart, hysterical dramady about a family in crisis after the disappearance of its misanthropic matriarch." That matriarch was Bernadette.Bernadette—at one time a revolutionary architect with a cult-like following—dropped out of that world to accompany her equally brilliant and odd husband to Seattle for his ground-breaking work in artificial intelligence with Microsoft. Bernadette, her mother, is a former MacArthur genius award winning architect, who is missing.The book is by turns hilarious and touching. It skewers helicopter parents, high tech, and Seattle. It also focuses on mother-daughter relationships, family dynamics, and creativity. The main characters, including Elgin the father and husband, are unforgettable. This is a book that makes you feel good!

In a nutshell, this is a book that begs the reader to not take it seriously, and just simply enjoy the amusement park ride that it is.This was recommended to me because it was "quirky and fun". I learned the author had written for a few quirky comedy television shows, which helped me in setting my expectations before jumping in. And just as anticipated, it reads like a screenplay for a fun quirky comedy. Going in with that expectation, I found the book to be a delight to read ~ the author takes what would be heavy issues in reality, and lets us see them in another light hearted way.Also, having grown up in Seattle, just a few years behind Bill Gates, and having classmates that went to work for Microsoft, there was a nostalgic / sentimental feel for me, as I read through the escapades of Bernadette and the Galer Street Gnats ... definitely quirky and fun.

For a time I lived around Cupertino, and I recognized many of the characters. I had the impression that the book would have continued in the vein (would be. 5 star review).However the quarrelsome/crazy women finds an iceberg and is rendered sane and functioning.
