If you have the previous book in the series, CS6, it is very similar. It goes over a few new techniques such as rotoscoping. It is not a purely step by step book. You will need some know how with After Effects. It really delves into a smattering of different "special effects" and how to incorporate them. It is for people who want to add to the basics of after effects and really get into some cool things you can do. It is not overly simple, but the author is very clear and concise. You may get lost and have to redo a couple things, but it is a logic step for beginners wanting to get better at fundamental effects. Do not start with this book if you are a complete beginner. Try CC classroom in a book first.Now the really bad.....The Kindle edition does not have a download code in the back of the book for the lesson files. I have contacted Peachpit, but they keep saying it is in the back of the book. They are not. I have used plenty of Kindle books with Peachpit download codes and none exist in this book. I did find the previous book's (CS6) download files after searching online for a while, but I believe they may differ a bit from this new one.Until I can get the download files the book is only somewhat helpful. I would normally give it 4 stars, but they gave me an incomplete product. When they do I will revise my review.EDIT-They acknowledged the missing download codes finally and sent them to me. They also stated the Kindle version would be updated.The book is worth-while if you don't have the previous version. I don't think there is enough different to warrant a successive purchase. Just look up the changes online to rotoscoping, etc. If you don't have the previous version or AE is still a bit new to you, then it is worthwhile.

Mark packs a lot of great information into this book. I have the CS6 version of this book, and bought this hoping to find new information that applies to the Creative Cloud version of AE. I haven't found anything that indicates what is new since the CS6 version, but I'm sure there are nuggets of info awaiting discovery. The CS6 version included footage and other files that have to be downloaded for anyone who purchases this edition of the book. Consequently, I feel the CS6 book is a better value, and thus I can only give this book 4 out of 5 stars. Regardless, I highly recommend this book as a resource and training guide for anyone who wishes to do compositing and VFX work with the Creative Cloud version of After Effects.

The author of this book certainly knows his stuff. But a word of caution to those who are new to After Effects: this book is NOT for you. The author even says so, right in the intro: "This is NOT a book for beginners...it's not an effective primer on After Effects in particular or digital video in general." So, I am not being critical of the book when I say this. I am merely trying to save you some dollars if you are just starting out in After Effects. You'll find a wealth of insight into how AE works in various production scenarios, and along the way you may pick up some tips that will be helpful, but if you are an AE newbie, stick to the Classroom In a Book series and get a year or two of solid AE work under your belt, then maybe come back to this one.

Very helpful and valuable info for any AE artist looking to step their game.

Aside from being grossly out of date in regards to the current version of After Effects, this book proves itself to be likewise sociographically out of date with the following comment on page 33:"A Chinese proverb in an earlier edition of this book stated, 'Men in the game are blind to what men looking on clearly see.' That may even be true for women, too, who knows?"Really? It's 2017. Are snarky sexist asides necessary? And hello, Adobe, Peachpit, et. al.: Do you really want to alienate women from the already-small pool of VFX designers who might actually consider buying this moldy tome?

This textbook was required for one of my graduate classes. It's one of the few books I've kept as a reference. Ended up using it for several more classes and have cited it in numerous research papers. The text layout looks dense, but it's easy to read. Includes updated teaching approaches and distance learning considerations. Incorporates various teaching/learning theories, but emphasizes student responsibility for the learning process. Am glad I was introduced to this author.

Just got this and love it. Every sentence, paragraph, section, chapter speaks to what I do every day and help me gain insight, clarity, and ideas on how to do things better. I just got this yesterday and have read more of it than any of the dozens of books I've purchased in the last year. If you teach nursing (clinical or classroom) this is very useful.

Saunders, a game designer and producer for 13 years, has worked on projects with Atari, Electronic Arts, Lucas Arts, Nexon, Obsidian Entertainment, Sega, Square Enix, and Westwood Studios. About the Author
John J. Coyle is director of corporate relations for the Center for Supply Chain Research and professor emeritus of supply chain and information systems at Penn State University. The author of more than 100 publications in the areas of transportation and logistics, Professor Coyle has presented papers on these topics at such professional meetings as the Council of Logistics Management, the American Marketing Association, the National Academy of Sciences, the Transportation Research Forum, and the Southern Marketing Association. In addition to TRANSPORTATION, he also coauthors best-selling THE MANAGEMENT OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS. From 1990 to 1996, Dr. Coyle was editor of the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, and he has served on the editorial review board of the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, THE SUPPLY CHAIN REVIEW, and THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS. In 1991, he received the Council of Logistics Management's Distinguished Service Award, which honors individuals who have made a significant contribution to the art and science of logistics. In 2003, The Philadelphia Traffic Club named Dr. Coyle Person of the Year, and in 2004 he received the Eccles Medal from the International Society of Logistics and the Lion's Paw Medal from Penn State. Dr. Coyle serves on the boards of three logistics companies. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Penn State and his doctorate from Indiana University, Bloomington, where he was a U.S. Steel Fellow.

John Langley, Professor of Supply Chain Management and Director of Supply Chain Executive Programs at the Georgia Institute of Technology, is actively involved in supply chain management and business logistics. His professional involvement includes supply chain strategy, supply chain relationships, and outsourcing of logistics services. Dr. Langley received a BS degree in mathematics, an MBA degree in finance, and a PhD degree in logistics management, all from Penn State University. Dr. Langley has coauthored numerous books and is a consultant and advisor to business firms and serves on the board of directors of UTi Worldwide Inc., Forward Air Corporation, and Averitt Express, Inc.

Brian Gibson, professor of Supply Chain Management Auburn University, is engaged in executive education and consulting, as well as leadership roles for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals and the Retail Industry Leaders Association. Dr. Gibson earned a BSBA from Central Michigan University, an MBA from Wayne State University, and a PhD in logistics and transportation from the University of Tennessee. He has received multiple awards for excellence in teaching, research, and outreach.

Robert Novack is an associate professor of supply chain management in the Department of Supply Chain and Information Systems at Penn State University. From 1981 to 1984 he worked in operations management and planning for the Yellow Freight Corporation in Overland Park, Kansas, and from 1984 to 1986 he worked in planning and transportation at Drackett Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Novack's numerous articles have been published in such publications as the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, TRANSPORTATION JOURNAL, and THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT. He also is a coauthor of CREATING LOGISTICS VALUE: THEMES FOR THE FUTURE. Active in the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, Dr. Novack has served as overall program chair for the annual conference, as a track chair, as a session speaker, and as a member of numerous committees. Dr. Novack holds the CTL designation from AST&L and is a member of WERC. He earned a BS degree and an MBA in logistics from Penn State University and a Ph.D. in logistics from the University of Tennessee.

Edward J. Bardi is principal of Bardi Consulting and professor emeritus of business logistics at the University of Toledo. He also has served as acting dean and associate dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Toledo and has held faculty positions at Iowa State University. Dr. Bardi has published numerous articles dealing with business logistics, transportation management, carrier selection, economic development, and employee household goods movement in various journals, including TRANSPORTATION JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, HANDLING AND SHIPPING, BAYLOR BUSINESS REVIEW, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT, LOGISTICS & TRANSPORTATION REVIEW, and PERSONNEL JOURNAL. About the Author
Julius O. Smith teaches a music signal-processing course sequence and supervises related research at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA). He is formally a professor of music and associate professor (by courtesy) of electrical engineering at Stanford University. In 1975, he received his BS/EE degree from Rice University, where he got a good start in the field of digital signal processing and modeling for control. In 1983, he received the PhD/EE degree from Stanford University, specializing in techniques for digital filter design and system identification, with application to violin modeling. His work history includes the Signal Processing Department at Electromagnetic Systems Laboratories, Inc., working on systems for digital communications, the Adaptive Systems Department at Systems Control Technology, Inc., working on research problems in adaptive filtering and spectral estimation, and NeXT Computer, Inc., where he was responsible for sound, music, and signal processing software for the NeXT computer workstation. Prof. Smith is a Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society and the Acoustical Society of America. He is the author of four online books and numerous research publications in his field. This book would appeal well to teenagers especially starting out on their path to a career in fantasy drawing. It explains concepts in an easily understood and 'friendly' way which talks 'with' not 'at' the reader. I noticed several things I say to my learners and so this would be a good book linked to college lessons on concept art. This book is laid out especially well and can either be read straight through or delved into for use. The diagrams were extremely helpful and detailed. I found it realistic and energetic and a good 'inspiration' itself (see page 14). The book is about fantasy combat and this is clear from the feel of movement and pace throughout the book. It is definitely one to recommend and the only thing I felt would enhance this is an accompany website or CD as the book could bend very quickly as it is a book to use not just read. This is a book that covers all the key areas and I'll be on the lookout for more from the same authors.-Marian Carr, Bradford College

About the Author
Matt Stawicki is an award-winning artist who has been creating dramatic fantasy images for over 20 years. His art has been on the covers of books for many fine authors, including (in no particular order) David Eddings, Margaret Weiss, Larry Nevin, Robert Heinlein, and Issac Asimov. In addition he has created images for a wide range of products, including collector's plates, figurines, collectable card games, and video game covers. His colorful work has been influenced by such notable artists as Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, and Maxfield Parrish. Matt is a classically trained oil painter and did all his work in oils for the first several years of his career. In recent years, Matt has moved to doing much of his art in "digital paint." The first collection of his art, The Art Of Matthew Stawicki is published by Cartouche Press. In addition, Matt's work has also been showcased in The Masters of Dragonlance Art and Dragon Art, published by Flame Tree Publishing.
