If I had more confidence in my math, I don't think I wouldn't have made such dumb mistakes in my recent case interview. So, that's where this book comes in...if you have math issues. If you work through this book - it'll take some of the pressure off your math nerves so you can focus on the case question. My framework was great (thank you Victor Cheng and LOMS) - but I think I was overwhelmed by the prospect of all of this math, and that made the nerves worse...and I got lost. I had this book, among 2 others - but I only went through about 1/2 of it. I should have done more.I like how he has many pages of drills on many topics (e.g., break even, profit, customer value). And, I like how he makes them get harder as it goes along within each chapter. This is exactly the way to teach something. His explanations are great and clearly written out on the next page of each practice item...again - great.One thing I'd love to see changed in future versions is this: He provides a lot of equations, but it would be better if he organized them a bit - because many of these equations are conceptually linked. Unfortunately, they are just listed here in one big group (which can be intimidating and hard to remember). If I were teaching a course in case interview prep - I'd explain how you can get ROI and net income and break even from a similar set of numbers - so students could remember these things and how they all relate. In this book, there is just a list, so you'll have to do that on your own.I don't think any firms are doing estimation cases anymore, but you still may get a mini-estimation problem within a larger case at an MBB firm. So, he does have a chapter on those - and it is good mental exercise regardless. Speaking of that, I like his little "table of useful facts" - how many people in the USA, how many households, etc...

Good cheat sheet to help you capture the formulas you need and good framework to do marketing estimations. However the practice part and exercise was very basic in level and way below the level of math I encountered in the firm’s I was interviewed for examples

I bought this book in preparation for a final round of case interviews. I learnt from previous interviews with the company that their cases are rather quant heavy - so I bought this as a supplement to 'case in point' just to get used to doing math problems in a case setting. This books have a clear structure and tons of practice, and after completing those extercises, I felt much more confident in my interviews:) Highly recommended!

I had an upcoming interview with a top consulting firm, and I was very nervous about my ability to do the quant case studies. I knew that the case study for this particular consulting firm focuses on market sizing, so this book was perfect for that. The book gave just the right amount of detail (which is totally different than, let's say, case interview secrets by Victor Cheng), was extremely clear, and provided examples after examples to practice on. My confidence was built after reading through the book, and I was able to blast through my quant case study during the interview. Thank you, Lewis Lin!! Highly recommend.

Having read Lewis' other books "Decode and Conquer" and "Rise Above the Noise" this book is much different as it is more of a workbook than a coaching manual. It focuses on the dreaded case interview questions which are being used by a variety of consulting companies (McKinsey, Bain, BCG, etc.) as well as many top employers including Google, Amazon, Microsoft...Great news is that just as his other books, he takes out the fluff and gets to the heart of the matter. Lewis begins by being very upfront of what to expect from the book and delivers on it in an efficient manner. As with his other book he has simple frameworks to help you organize your thoughts and break down a problem into the necessary pieces.I interviewed with several consulting firms as an MBA student and found that his frameworks were spot on and you can essentially take what he gives you and make it your own. The practice problems in this book are great and essentially what you would find in a case interview and include a variety of topics (including a problem on Pillow Pets!)It's hard for me to imagine a case interview question that this book would not aid you in answering. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is prepping for case interviews, it's a great tool and will let you focus on more important things and quickly and succinctly organize your thoughts.Interview Tip: Half the case interview question is actually being able to explain your thought process to the interviewer and make it so they are able to follow you and your thought process (an essential skill when working as well) so be sure to not only practice solving the problems but organizing your thoughts and diagrams in a manner that you can show someone else. They should not wonder how you got from 1 step to the next.

About the Author
J. Michael Geringer is a professor of strategy and international management at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. He earned a BS in business at Indiana University and MBA and PhD degrees at the University of Washington. He has authored or edited 14 books and monographs, over 110 published papers, and over 35 case studies; he serves on the editorial boards of several leading international academic journals; he served as the Saastamoinen Foundation Chair at the Helsinki School of Economics in Finland; he was the founding chair of the Strategic alliances Committee of the Licensing Executives Society; he served as the chair of both the International Business and the Strategy and Policy divisions of the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada; and he is past chairperson of the Academy of Management’s International Management division. His research has appeared in the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of International Management, Columbia Journal of World Business, Management International Review, Journal of Management Studies, Human Resource Management Journal, Long Range Planning, Organisation Studies, and Journal of Applied Psychology, among others. He has received 11 “best paper” awards for his research, including the Decade Award for most influential article from the Journal of International Business Studies. He was educated at the University of North Carolina, American University, and Cornell and holds a PhD from Vanderbilt University. His research focuses on comparative consumer behavior, international marketing strategy, political risk, and the consumption of high-technology experiential products. He has published in the Journal of International Business Studies, the Journal of Consumer Marketing, International Studies of Management and Organization, the Journal of Services Marketing, International Business Review, Journal of Interactive Advertising, and elsewhere. He has written for business and popular media from PCWeek to Tennessee Business Magazine. He is past chairperson of the Consumer Behavior Special Interest Group, and past vice chair of the Technology and Marketing Special Interest Group of the American Marketing Association, as well as a former member of the Global Marketing SIG’s board of directors. He is active in DOCNET, the association of business doctoral program administrators. He serves on multiple editorial advisory boards and is the coauthor with John C. Mowen of several consumer behavior books. He has won multiple master’s-level teaching awards and was recently the doctoral program professor of the year. His consulting experience includes work for UNCTAD’s Division on Investment, Technology and Enterprise Development and several U.S. and state government agencies. He has reviewed grant proposals for the Research Council of Norway as well as several U.S. agencies. He lived in Asia for a number of years, and speaks Chinese. He relaxes by playing the mandolin and harmonica for the country/classic rock groups RiverRock and Coastlands.

Jeanne M. McNett is a professor of management at Assumption College, in Worcester, Massachusetts. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an MBA at the Cass School of Business, City University, London. She has had expatriate assignments in Germany, the UK, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Korea. Her interests include the role of culture in international business and the pedagogy of international management. Her publications include The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management. Vol. VI: International Management, 2nd ed., Oxford, UK: Blackwell Publishing (2005); and The Blackwell Handbook of Global Management, Oxford, UK: Blackwell Publishing (2004). Her teaching, research and presentations have received many awards, including The Roethlisberger Best Paper of the Year Award from the Journal of Management Education and the Alpha Phi Alpha Teacher of the Year Award. Her articles have been included in journals and collections focused on teaching in the area of international business. She is an avid master rower and enjoys running, reading, and gardening.
